Rare & Museum-Grade Original Japanese Movie Posters

Explore Japan Poster Shop’s exceptional collection of rare and museum-grade original Japanese movie posters, bringing together some of the most elusive, historically significant and highly sought-after examples of Japanese theatrical advertising and cinematic graphic art.

This collection represents a selection of our rarest and most important holdings, encompassing original Japanese posters of extraordinary scarcity, exceptional historical significance and outstanding visual distinction. Certain examples are believed to survive in only a handful of known copies, while others are seldom encountered outside established private collections, specialist archives and museums.

Our collection includes exceptionally rare first-release Japanese theatrical posters, important early cinema advertising, original artwork associated with landmark films, and unusual promotional formats produced in extremely limited quantities. Of particular significance are original posters for celebrated works such as Godzilla (1954), Godzilla Raids Again (1955), Seven Samurai (1954) and the early Japanese releases of internationally acclaimed cinema, alongside rare Star Wars, James Bond, Studio Ghibli and Akira material.

Among our most significant holdings are rare Japanese B1 and B2 theatrical posters, exceptionally scarce STB Tatekan posters, large-format B0 billboards, advance promotional designs, unused examples and historically important advertising variants. Some of these formats were produced for specific cinemas, limited promotional campaigns or short theatrical engagements, contributing to their extraordinary scarcity today.

Many pieces have been acquired through private collectors, specialist Japanese dealers and off-market collections, with certain examples possessing documented exhibition histories, published references or distinguished provenance. Their rarity is often compounded by the passage of time, the ephemeral nature of theatrical advertising and the exceptionally low survival rates of large-format or cinema-displayed material.

We place particular importance on authenticity, condition, provenance and historical accuracy. Every poster is individually researched, carefully catalogued and photographed, with surviving period characteristics and any restoration clearly described.

These original Japanese posters represent more than film memorabilia. At their finest, they are important surviving artefacts of cinema history, Japanese graphic design and twentieth-century visual culture, worthy of serious private collections, specialist archives and institutional consideration.

Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
