“The Great Godzilla Expo” (ゴジラ誕生40周年記念 大ゴジラ博), Original Japanese 40th-Anniversary Promotional Event Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T284
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster produced for The Great Godzilla Expo, celebrating forty years since the original Godzilla appeared in 1954. Organised by Toho and TBS, the exhibition ran from 21 July to 31 August 1994 at Ikebukuro Sunshine City’s Cultural Center, 4th Floor, in Tokyo.
Event background
The exhibition brought together four decades of Godzilla history through monster displays, dioramas, special-effects attractions, games, museum exhibits and dedicated merchandise areas. It celebrated the franchise’s past while embracing the contemporary Heisei films and their imposing incarnation of Godzilla.
A small announcement at the lower left promotes the forthcoming Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, opening nationwide through Toho on 10 December 1994. This makes the sheet a particularly evocative piece of anniversary-year advertising: a purpose-made exhibition poster connecting Godzilla’s history with his next cinematic appearance.
Poster design
An enormous close-up of Heisei Godzilla’s face dominates the composition, illuminated in scarlet and orange against a fiery background. Amber-yellow eyes emerge from deep black shadows, while the tightly cropped portrait emphasises the creature’s textured scales, heavy brows and formidable jaws.
The exhibition title, 「大ゴジラ博」, stretches across the upper portion in massive white characters with pronounced black dimensional shadows. Above it, the anniversary wording establishes the occasion, while the yellow vertical tagline reads “A gigantic shadow is heading toward Sunshine.” This playful reference to the venue turns the announcement into an image of Godzilla approaching Ikebukuro.
White lettering at the lower right supplies the dates and location. The concentrated red, black, white and yellow palette gives the design exceptional visual impact in the B2 format.
