This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 2002 to advertise the DVD/VHS release of Battle Royale – Special Version (バトル・ロワイアル 特別篇), the extended director’s cut of Kinji Fukasaku’s 2000 cult classic.
Film background
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku and based on the novel by Koushun Takami, Battle Royale follows a class of junior-high students forced by a dystopian government program to fight to the death. The film became a global cult phenomenon and a landmark of Japanese cinema.
Poster design
A stark grid of the students’ headshots (black-and-white) fills the top, punctuated by blood splatters, while Takeshi Kitano appears ghosted at the bottom. The bold red title バトル・ロワイアル 特別篇 dominates the center with the BR laurel seal and R-15 rating badge below.
