"The Abominable Snowman" (Original: 1955, STB Poster for 1998 VHS Re-Release) – Japanese STB Size Poster
獣人雪男 | Toho Studios | Directed by Ishirō Honda | Special Effects by Eiji Tsuburaya

A rare and visually stunning STB-size (tatekan) Japanese poster for The Abominable Snowman (獣人雪男), originally released by Toho Studios in 1955 and reissued here in 1998 to coincide with a special VHS release. Directed by Ishirō Honda — the visionary behind Godzilla — and featuring groundbreaking effects by Eiji Tsuburaya, this film stands as a dark, atmospheric entry in Japan’s early kaiju canon.

The poster evokes classic Showa-era monster horror with its dramatic alpine setting and haunting portrait of the titular creature. Towering amidst the Japanese Alps, the snowman looms large as a symbol of nature’s wrath and mystery, surrounded by bears, craggy peaks, and fearful humans. At the bottom, tense portraits of the cast — clutching knives and peering from the shadows — emphasize the film’s hybrid of survival thriller and moral fable.

Unlike Honda’s more urban creature features, The Abominable Snowman explores the ethics of exploitation and mankind’s disruptive presence in untamed lands. Long considered “lost” due to limited availability outside Japan, it was reintroduced to a new generation of collectors and kaiju fans during the late '90s home video revival.

This 1998-issued STB-format poster is a striking homage to Toho’s golden age.

An original STB poster for this film would be several thousand dollars (perhaps more than $10,000 USD) and is exceedingly rare!

It is over 27 years old!
