This is an original Japanese STB tatekan (two‑panel standing) poster printed in 1975 for a special re‑release of Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai (七人の侍).

Film background

First released in 1954, Seven Samurai follows a group of rōnin hired by villagers to defend their homes from bandits, weaving action, humour and human drama into one of the most influential films ever made. Its structure inspired countless later works, from The Magnificent Seven to modern ensemble action films. The 1975 Japanese re‑issue brought Kurosawa’s fully restored 3‑hour‑plus original version back to cinemas, cementing its status as a cornerstone of world cinema.

Poster design

The towering STB format perfectly suits the film’s epic scale. At the top, intense close‑ups of Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura dominate the sky, while below them a line of peasants and samurai stand silhouetted on the ridge, spears raised. The huge, blood‑red brushstroke title “七人の侍” slashes down the entire length of the poster, cutting through smoke‑filled battle scenes at the bottom where mounted bandits and samurai clash in the mud. Kurosawa’s director credit appears boldly in turquoise kanji, underlining his authorship. It’s one of the most dynamic and collectible designs for this film.

Rarity and condition

STB / tatekan posters were printed in relatively low quantities and intended for use in cinema lobbies or on street stands, often exposed to the elements. As a result, far fewer survive compared with standard B2s. Re‑release Seven Samurai STBs are particularly elusive and are highly desirable to Kurosawa and classic Japanese cinema collectors.
