This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1971 for the spring Toei Manga Matsuri (Toei Cartoon Festival) celebrating the studio’s 20th anniversary. The headline feature is the colour feature-length anime “Animal Treasure Island” (どうぶつ宝島) — a swashbuckling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island directed by Hiroshi Ikeda with key animation and storyboards by a young Hayao Miyazaki.

The programme also advertised on the sheet includes:

• “Magical Mako-chan” (魔法のマコちゃん)

• “Norimono no Iro-Iro” (のりもののいろいろ)
