"Dr. No", Original First-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1962, STB Tatekan Size 20 × 57 " (51 × 145 cm), Linen-Backed, Museum Grade

Sale price $11,500.00

This is an original Japanese STB (two-panel tatekan) poster printed in 1962 for the first Japanese release of Dr. No—the film that launched the James Bond franchise.

Why this example is exceptional — and a strong investment

  • Ultra-rare format – STB posters were produced in far smaller numbers than standard B2s. In 10+ years of dedicated collecting we have found only two in Japan—both now in our gallery.

  • Museum-quality conservation – Shipped from Tokyo to a leading Californian studio for professional linen-backing and de-acidification. The poster is stabilised, display-ready and archivally preserved.

  • Proven investment potential – A far more common British Quad of Dr. No realised US $115,000 at Sotheby’s in 2019. Top-tier Japanese tatekans are scarcer and increasingly sought after; owning “the best of the best” is the safest strategy when investing in vintage cinema art.

  • Country-of-origin collectible – Printed by Toho-Towa for Japan’s premiere run, making it a cornerstone piece for serious 007 collections.

  • Choice of copies – We also hold the only other specimen we’ve ever seen (unbacked) should you prefer an unrestored example.

Historical note

When United Artists released Dr. No, expectations were modest—the studio viewed it as just another action picture, not the beginning of one of the longest-running film series in history. Six decades later, Bond remains a global cultural icon spanning 25 films and counting.

Artwork & format

At nearly five feet tall, this tatekan showcases dramatic, action-centric artwork rarely seen on Western posters—Japanese Bond graphics are widely regarded as the finest in the world, out-shining even the famed British and American campaigns. The STB format’s low print run and striking vertical composition make it the centrepiece of any Bond or mid-century design collection.
