Original Japanese Kinji Fukasaku Movie Posters
Kinji Fukasaku (深作 欣二, 1930–2003) was one of the most influential directors in Japanese cinema, celebrated for his uncompromising filmmaking, dynamic visual style and revolutionary contribution to the yakuza genre. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Fukasaku directed some of Japan’s most significant crime, action and cult films, establishing a cinematic legacy that continues to influence filmmakers worldwide.
His defining achievement, Battles Without Honor and Humanity (仁義なき戦い, 1973), transformed Japanese gangster cinema. Starring Bunta Sugawara, the film rejected the romanticised codes of traditional yakuza pictures in favour of a raw, documentary-inspired portrayal of organised crime in postwar Hiroshima. Its success launched a celebrated series that remains among the most important achievements of 1970s Japanese cinema.
Fukasaku’s remarkable filmography also includes Street Mobster (1972), Graveyard of Honor (1975), Cops vs. Thugs (1975), Yakuza Graveyard (1976), The Yagyu Conspiracy (1978), Message from Space (1978) and Battle Royale (2000). His work crossed genres while retaining a distinctive visual identity characterised by kinetic camerawork, social commentary and an uncompromising examination of violence and authority.
This collection brings together an extensive selection of original Japanese theatrical movie posters from throughout Fukasaku’s career, including rare first-release examples, B2 theatrical posters, large-format B1 posters and scarce STB Tatekan designs. Particularly significant are the original promotional materials for the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, whose striking typography, dramatic compositions and vivid imagery reflect the transformation of Japanese cinema during the 1970s.
Many of these original posters are now over fifty years old, and surviving first-release examples in excellent condition are increasingly difficult to obtain. The rarest designs are important artefacts of Japanese cinematic and graphic design history, sought after by collectors of Showa-era cinema and original theatrical advertising.
Carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued, Japan Poster Shop’s Kinji Fukasaku collection represents an important part of our wider holdings of Japanese yakuza cinema, postwar film history and rare original Japanese movie posters.
