“A Boy Named Charlie Brown” / 「スヌーピーとチャーリー・ブラウン」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1983, Rare B1 Size (73 × 103 cm) C219

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster printed for the 1983 Japanese re-release of A Boy Named Charlie Brown / 「スヌーピーとチャーリー・ブラウン」, the first feature-length animated film based on Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts comic strip.

This is the substantially larger and scarcer B1 format, measuring approximately 72.8 × 103 cm. Its vivid colours, oversized character artwork, and dynamic composition give it exceptional display presence.

Film background

Originally released in 1969, A Boy Named Charlie Brown follows the perpetually uncertain but quietly determined Charlie Brown as he unexpectedly excels in his school spelling bee.

After winning at the local level, Charlie travels to New York City to compete in the National Spelling Bee, accompanied and supported by Linus and the wider Peanuts gang. His journey becomes a characteristically gentle and bittersweet exploration of confidence, disappointment, friendship, and resilience.

The film was directed by Bill Melendez, produced by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, and written by Charles M. Schulz. Its music includes work by Vince Guaraldi, whose distinctive jazz compositions became inseparable from the animated Peanuts universe, alongside songs by Rod McKuen.

The film remains celebrated for preserving the understated humour, emotional honesty, and hand-drawn simplicity of Schulz’s original comic strips while successfully expanding the Peanuts world into a full-length theatrical production.

Poster design

The poster uses a wonderfully energetic and colourful composition dominated by Snoopy and Charlie Brown floating through the sky in a balloon basket.

Charlie Brown sits uneasily in the centre while clutching the rope, his expression conveying his familiar mixture of anxiety and resignation. Snoopy sits calmly beside him, appearing characteristically relaxed despite the surrounding chaos.

Below them, members of the Peanuts gang cling precariously to the long trailing rope as the balloon rises through a bright turquoise sky. Their exaggerated expressions and frantic poses create a playful sense of movement, while large white clouds reinforce the poster’s light, airborne atmosphere.

The enormous pink balloon fills much of the upper background and provides the field for the bold Japanese title:

「スヌーピーとチャーリー・ブラウン」

The smaller notation:

「日本語版」

identifies this as the promotional poster for the Japanese-language version.

The curved black headline across the top reads:

「スヌーピーのトボけた愛は地球的。」

“Snoopy’s wonderfully goofy love is universal.”

The vertical white text along the right reads:

「世界のアイドル、スヌーピーとチャーリー・ブラウン、楽しい仲間とあそぼうよ。」

“The world’s favourite Snoopy and Charlie Brown—come and play with their delightful friends.”

The original English title:

“A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN”

appears along the lower-left edge, accompanied by the principal production credits and the copyright mark for Charles M. Schulz’s characters.

The striking combination of hot pink, turquoise, yellow, orange, and white makes this one of the most immediately cheerful and decorative Japanese Peanuts poster designs.

Release and format note

This poster was printed for the film’s 1983 Japanese theatrical re-release.

It is an original Japanese B1-size poster, measuring approximately:

72.8 × 103 cm / 28.7 × 40.6 inches

B1 posters were produced in considerably smaller numbers than the standard Japanese B2 format and were intended for prominent display inside cinemas and other large promotional spaces.

Because of their greater dimensions, they were normally folded for distribution and storage. Surviving original B1 examples are substantially less common and are increasingly sought after by collectors of Peanuts, Snoopy, vintage animation, and Japanese theatrical poster art.

It is an original period Japanese theatrical poster, not a later reproduction or commercial reprint.

Condition

Very good+ condition.

The poster was previously folded, with the original horizontal and vertical fold lines visible. There is light wear along the folds, together with minor edge and corner handling consistent with an original large-format theatrical poster from this period.

The colours remain exceptionally bright and vibrant, the artwork is complete, and the poster retains excellent overall display impact.

The reverse is blank, as expected.

Please review the photographs carefully, as they show the exact poster offered for sale.
