“Akira” (アキラ), Ultra‑Rare Original Japanese Bookstore Display / Young Magazine Promotional “WAKE UP! AKIRA — PART 2” Poster 1985, Size (c. 72.8 × 36 cm) O62

Sale price $1,250.00

This is an original Japanese bookstore display poster (promotional poster) issued by Kodansha to advertise AKIRA PART 2 (the second tankōbon). Produced for Young Magazine point‑of‑sale in 1985, it is the an extremely scarce long format for bookshop display.

Ultra‑rare: acquired by Japan Poster Shop from the same dedicated Katsuhiro Otomo / Akira collector in Japan who assembled these over decades. Pieces of this type are virtually never offered for sale. This design is reproduced in the official AKIRA CLUB compendium.

The copy band at foot promotes the release in detail, while the red burst proclaims 「緊急警報/待望の第2巻 好評発売中!」 (“Emergency alert / The long‑awaited Vol. 2—on sale now!”).

Akira (1988) is Katsuhiro Otomo’s epoch‑defining post‑apocalyptic, cyberpunk landmark—based on his manga that began in 1982 in Young Magazine. Its world‑building and animation reshaped anime and global pop culture; these 1980s bookstore flyers sit at the very heart of Akira’s original manga‑era marketing.

Poster design

A striking, pixelated halftone image dominates the field (Tetsuo mid‑crisis), flanked by a towering “WAKE UP! AKIRA” headline in English. A vivid red splatter cartouche shouts the Vol. 2 announcement. Along the bottom, a bold sash reads “AKIRA BY OTOMO KATSUHIRO — PART 2〈アキラ〉” with selling points: 「描きおろしカバー/巻頭カラー8ページ/B5判306ページ/定価880円」; the Young Magazine and 講談社 (Kodansha) marks anchor the right corner. The dense English synopsis column at left pushes the urgent, world‑in‑peril tone that defined Young Magazine’s house style.

Why collectors prize this example

Bookstore poster tied directly to the 1985 tankōbon release of PART 2—far scarcer than theatrical or video‑shop posters.
Printed in very small numbers for in‑store use; most were discarded—survivors are exceptionally rare.
Documented in AKIRA CLUB, underscoring its importance in the franchise’s promotional history.
From a long‑time Japanese Akira / Otomo collection—holy‑grail‑level material that is almost never on the market.
