“Dreams” (夢), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E249

An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990), featuring a striking design that places Kurosawa and presenter Steven Spielberg at the centre of the campaign.

Written and directed by Kurosawa, the film unfolds through eight dream-inspired episodes, moving between childhood memories, Japanese folklore, artistic discovery and visions of environmental catastrophe. Its extraordinary imagery includes a mysterious fox wedding, encounters with the ghosts of war, and a journey into the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, played by Martin Scorsese. It remains a deeply personal expression of Kurosawa’s imagination and his concern for humanity’s relationship with nature.

This poster pairs two large photographic portraits against a pale cream background. On the left, Kurosawa wears his familiar cap and dark glasses, pointing towards the viewer; on the right, Spielberg appears smiling in a baseball cap and leather jacket. Bold black Japanese lettering runs vertically along the outer margins, identifying Kurosawa as director and Spielberg as presenter.

A vivid rainbow sweeps across the lower edges of the photographs, linking the portraits with the dreamlike imagery beneath. Small coloured squares scatter down the left side, while a solitary boy in a patterned kimono stands below the rainbow. The enormous indigo brushwork title 夢 anchors the lower composition, accompanied by the elegant English lettering “Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.”

The green Japanese copy evokes the film’s movement through past, present and future into a world of wonder beyond time. The combination of commanding portraits, expressive calligraphy and playful colour gives this design particular appeal for collectors of Kurosawa and Japanese film advertising.

Condition: Excellent, close to Near Mint. A very clean example with strong colour and beautifully preserved imagery. Only very light signs of handling are apparent in the supplied photographs, and the reverse presents cleanly overall.
