"Gatchaman" / Ken the Eagle, Original Japanese Animation Cel-ga c. late 1970s, 26.5 × 19 cm

Sale price $250.00

This is an original Japanese animation cel-ga depicting Ken Washio / Ken the Eagle from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (科学忍者隊ガッチャマン), likely produced in the late 1970s. It remains sealed inside its old plastic sleeve/envelope, which has clearly aged over time, with yellowed tape and visible waviness. We have not attempted to open it, and the artwork is likely stuck inside its original plastic covering. Pieces of this kind were working studio materials or related production-era animation artwork, and surviving examples from the period are highly collectible today.

Background
First airing in 1972, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman became one of the most important anime series of its era, produced by Tatsunoko Production and later adapted internationally under titles including Battle of the Planets and G-Force. The character shown here is Ken Washio, better known as Ken the Eagle, the central hero of the series and one of its most iconic figures. With its sleek character design, bird-themed costumes, and dynamic team concept, Gatchaman helped define the visual language of later superhero-team anime and remains a landmark title in Japanese animation history.

Artwork design
The cel-ga shows Ken the Eagle in a dramatic airborne action pose, wearing his instantly recognizable Bird Style costume with white tunic, blue leggings, red bird emblem, helmet, and sweeping red winged cape. The composition is bold and highly displayable, capturing the dynamic energy and graphic clarity that made the character so memorable. The colours remain strong and vivid as seen through the sleeve, and the image has excellent visual impact despite the age-related wear to the plastic housing.

This cel-ga is in good condition. It remains inside its original aged plastic sleeve, and the tape has yellowed with age. The sleeve shows waviness, reflections, age toning, and storage wear, and because we have not opened it, there may be condition details not fully visible beneath the plastic. The artwork is likely adhered to the inside of the sleeve. Please refer carefully to the imagery, as this is the exact piece that is for sale.
