“Ghost in the Shell” (攻殻機動隊), Original Japanese First-Release Cinema Pamphlet 1995, B4 Size (c. 26 × 36 cm) Q66

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese first-release cinema pamphlet issued for the 1995 theatrical release of Ghost in the Shell (攻殻機動隊), Mamoru Oshii’s landmark cyberpunk anime adapted from Shirow Masamune’s manga. In Japan, these cinema pamphlets were sold at theatres as premium souvenirs rather than distributed as ordinary advertising, and first-release examples for major anime titles are now highly sought after by collectors.

Pamphlet background

Issued for the film’s Japanese premiere on 18 November 1995, this programme belongs to the very first wave of material produced for the film’s domestic launch, before its later elevation into one of the most influential and internationally celebrated anime works ever made. As such, it is not merely ancillary merchandise but an important contemporary document of how Ghost in the Shell was originally presented to Japanese audiences at the moment of release.

Contents and design

This pamphlet is in the larger B4 format, with a rich mixture of production imagery, design material, character information, and world-building content. It is especially valued for presenting the film’s visual universe in a format closer to an art programme than a simple brochure. As noted, examples from this release are known to include a set of large-format panels and substantial background material from Oshii’s production team, giving the booklet real archival value for collectors interested in the film’s development, design language, and early reception.

The front cover is instantly recognisable: Major Kusanagi dominates the composition in one of the film’s most iconic early images, with the English GHOST IN THE SHELL title in bold red across the lower half. The reverse is equally important for collectors, featuring a period-correct Pioneer advertisement. That back-cover advert is one of the clearest tells that this is an authentic original issue from the time of the film’s first release, and not a later reproduction or reprint.

Why collectors prize it

First-release Japanese cinema pamphlet for one of the most important anime films ever made.

A significant historical record of the film before its full global rise to cult and canonical status.

The Pioneer back-cover advertisement is a key period detail and a strong authenticity marker.

Larger B4 format gives it excellent visual presence and makes it especially appealing alongside original posters and other 1995 release material.
