“GODZILLA MINUS ONE / ゴジラ-1.0”, ORIGINAL JAPANESE DOUBLE-SIDED B1 THEATRICAL ADVANCE POSTER 2023, Ultra Rare, B1 Size (c. 72.8 × 103 cm)

Sale price $1,150.00

An exceptional original Japanese double-sided B1 theatrical advance poster for Godzilla Minus One / ゴジラ-1.0, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also supervised the film’s visual effects.

Produced for the film’s original 2023 Japanese theatrical campaign, this striking advance design presents Godzilla within an immense, distressed “G −1.0” composition. The printed “11.3 Fri” release announcement refers to 3 November 2023, the film’s original Japanese opening date. The imagery belongs to the early publicity campaign unveiled ahead of the film’s release, before its subsequent international acclaim and awards.

Against a pale background, Godzilla’s heavily textured body emerges through smoky blue-grey tones, scattered debris and glowing orange-red embers. The sweeping upper curve of the “G”, jagged dorsal plates and fractured lettering create an image that is simultaneously restrained and monumental.

This example is especially desirable in the large Japanese B1 format, with double-sided printing and a mirror-image reverse for illuminated cinema light-box display. The combination of format, specialist printing and Excellent+ condition makes this a particularly compelling example of the film’s original Japanese publicity material.

The poster carries the vertical Japanese tagline:

戦後、日本。
無から負へ。

“Postwar Japan.
From zero to minus.”

The small reading guides identify 無 as zero and 負 as minus, with the latter printed in red—a concise visual expression of the film’s central premise.

A superb home-market Godzilla theatrical sheet: original 2023 Japanese release, double-sided, large-format B1, ultra rare, and presented in Excellent+ condition.

Design Notes

The strength of this design lies in its integration of the creature and the film’s identity into a single monumental image. Rather than relying on a conventional cast montage, the composition is dominated by an enormous, brush-like “G”, its upper curve sweeping across the sheet while its lower section contains Godzilla’s advancing body.

Muted blue-grey and greenish tones provide a smoky atmospheric setting, interrupted by intense orange-red embers. Godzilla’s dark, craggy skin and sharply articulated dorsal plates introduce extraordinary texture, contrasting with the broad expanses of pale surrounding paper.

Below, the oversized “−1.0” continues the distressed treatment. Its strokes contain dark, scorched-looking textures, while ragged extensions descend from the upper image towards the zero. These fractured and eroded effects are part of the printed artwork, rather than damage to the sheet.

Typography is deliberately sparse. The release date occupies the lower left, while the Japanese title, Toho credit and “NOT FOR SALE” marking sit at the lower right. Yamazaki’s director, screenplay and VFX credit appears at the upper right.

At full B1 scale, the balance between open space, intricate surface detail and violent bursts of colour gives the poster exceptional visual presence.

Godzilla’s History in Brief

Godzilla first appeared in Toho’s 1954 film, directed by Ishirō Honda. Conceived against the background of nuclear anxiety, the original transformed the giant monster into something more disturbing than a spectacle: an embodiment of destructive forces that humanity could unleash but could not easily control. Across the following decades, Godzilla became the centre of an extraordinary, continually evolving cinematic franchise.

Godzilla Minus One returns to the relationship between the monster and national catastrophe by setting its story in Japan’s immediate postwar years. Yamazaki’s explanation of the title was direct: a country already reduced to nothing is confronted by a further disaster that drives it below zero. The poster’s “From zero to minus” tagline distils that premise into just a few characters.

An Award-Winning Modern Godzilla Classic

Godzilla Minus One stands among the most highly acclaimed modern Godzilla films, praised for combining large-scale destruction with an emotionally engaging human story. At the time of writing, it holds a 99% critics’ approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 98% verified audience score—figures checked on 4 October 2026.

Its most significant international distinction was the 2024 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This made it the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar and the first Japanese film to win that category, an important milestone for both the franchise and Japanese visual-effects filmmaking.

In Japan, the film also won eight awards at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Sakura Ando, together with awards for cinematography, lighting, art direction, sound and editing.

This poster represents the film as it was first introduced to Japanese cinema audiences, rather than through later award-season or commemorative publicity.

Double-Sided Light-Box Format

This poster is printed on both sides, with the reverse reproducing the front artwork in mirror image. The backwards lettering visible in the reverse photograph is intentional: it allows the two printed images to align when viewed from the front with light passing through the sheet.

The reverse printing helps the image retain colour saturation and tonal depth under illumination, reducing the washed-out appearance that can occur when a single-sided poster is lit from behind. It is a functional cinema-display specification, not simply an alternative image printed on the back.

For this example, the collector distinction is the complete combination: original Japanese theatrical issue, B1 scale, double-sided light-box printing and the advance “G −1.0” design. The reverse photograph is therefore an important part of the documentation of the poster.

Rarity in the Digital Age

A recent release does not necessarily mean readily available original theatrical paper. The widespread circulation of a film’s artwork online is quite different from the availability of the physical sheets produced for its cinema campaign.

These double-sided B1 posters are understood to have had very limited initial distribution, with strict studio controls intended to restrict their passage into the secondary market. No precise print-run or surviving quantity is claimed; “Ultra Rare” refers to the availability of this particular theatrical issue to collectors, rather than to a numbered limited edition.

The printed “NOT FOR SALE” designation is an important detail, identifying the sheet as non-retail promotional material. It does not, by itself, establish a production quantity, but it reinforces the distinction between an original cinema publicity poster and a commercially sold decorative print.

Here, the appeal is not simply the scarcity of the format, but the opportunity to obtain it in Excellent+ condition, with the expansive pale areas and finely detailed central image retaining such strong display quality.

Condition Report

Excellent+ condition.

The poster presents beautifully, with strong colour, crisp printing and excellent image clarity. The intricate textures of Godzilla’s skin and dorsal plates remain sharply defined, while the glowing embers provide vivid contrast against the restrained background.

The photographs show light handling creases, gentle surface undulation and minor edge and corner wear, particularly around portions of the pale perimeter. These imperfections are reflected in the Excellent+ grade.

The overall presentation remains highly impressive, especially at this scale, with the principal artwork retaining its impact.

This is the exact poster shown in the photographs. The front, mirror-image reverse and detailed views form part of the condition description.

Authenticity Statement

This is an original 2023 Japanese theatrical B1 advance poster for Godzilla Minus One / ゴジラ-1.0.

It is not a later decorative reproduction, not a contemporary retail poster and not an award-season reissue. It is the original theatrical article: Japanese B1 size, double-sided, with a mirror-image reverse and the original “11.3 Fri” Japanese release announcement.

The Toho distribution credit, 2023 copyright line and “NOT FOR SALE” marking are visible in the lower-right printing. Together with the original campaign design and specialist double-sided format, these details are consistent with its role as release-period cinema publicity material.

For collectors of Godzilla and Japanese film graphics, the appeal is clear: an original home-market poster combining a striking advance design with an exceptionally desirable theatrical format.

A major modern Godzilla poster rarity: original 2023 Japanese advance issue, double-sided B1, Excellent+ condition, and a commanding graphic statement from a landmark film in the series.
