“Godzilla vs. Gigan” / 「地球攻撃命令 ゴジラ対ガイガン」, Toho Champion Festival, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1972, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D296
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1972 for a Toho Champion Matsuri / Toho Champion Festival theatrical programme built around Godzilla vs. Gigan. Rather than promoting a single standalone screening, this sheet advertises one of Toho’s famous school-holiday all-family matinee programmes, in which kaijū features, tokusatsu heroes, anime, and children’s entertainment were bundled together for young audiences.
Film / programme background
Released in 1972, Godzilla vs. Gigan (「地球攻撃命令 ゴジラ対ガイガン」) was directed by Jun Fukuda and remains one of the key later Shōwa-era Godzilla titles, introducing the razor-limbed alien monster Gigan in a spectacular showdown also involving King Ghidorah. In Japan, the film was exhibited as part of the immensely popular Toho Champion Festival circuit, a series that became a defining childhood cinema experience for a generation of Japanese audiences.
This particular poster promotes a lively multi-title programme featuring Godzilla vs. Gigan alongside other family-oriented attractions, including Mirror Man (ミラーマン), Return of Ultraman (帰ってきたウルトラマン), Honeybee Hutch (みなしごハッチ), Kashi no Ki Mokku (かしの木モック), and Tensai Bakabon (天才バカボン). As such, it is not merely a Godzilla poster, but a vivid document of early-1970s Japanese popular culture and children’s exhibition history.
Poster design
This is a wonderfully exuberant Champion Matsuri design, created to catch the eye of children and families. The upper half is dominated by a bold blue-sky kaijū montage: Godzilla stands at the centre, flanked by Gigan, King Ghidorah, and other fantastical creatures and heroes, including Mirror Man, with aircraft streaking overhead. The familiar pink circular 東宝チャンピオンまつり logo anchors the centre.
Below, the design shifts into a warm golden field listing the programme titles in tall vertical lettering, surrounded by brightly rendered animated and tokusatsu characters. This collision of monsters, superheroes, and cartoon figures is precisely what makes the Champion Festival posters so appealing: they encapsulate the full, joyful chaos of Japanese children’s entertainment in the period.
Visually, it is an exceptionally charming and nostalgic sheet — at once a Godzilla poster, a festival poster, and a broader snapshot of the Toho children’s matinee phenomenon.
