“High and Low” (天国と地獄), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K312A

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1990 for a Japanese re-release of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low (天国と地獄), a Japan crime masterpiece directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshirō Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, and Kyōko Kagawa (with Takashi Shimura).

Film background
First released in 1963, High and Low is one of Kurosawa’s greatest modern-era films—a razor-sharp kidnapping thriller that evolves into a sweeping procedural and moral study of class, conscience, and modern Japan. A wealthy executive is forced into a life-altering decision when a ransom demand targets a child connected to his household, and the film’s second half becomes a masterclass in police methodology and escalating tension. It remains a cornerstone of Japanese suspense cinema and hugely influential on later crime filmmaking worldwide.

Poster design
A bold, late-20th-century re-release design that foregrounds the film’s pressure-cooker intensity. The title 「天国と地獄」 is blasted across the top in huge, brush-stroke yellow under the red 「黒沢明監督作品」 director credit. Below, a tense interior tableau unfolds: multiple faces locked in anxiety and calculation, telephones pressed to ears, bodies sprawled on the floor, and a panoramic city view beyond the windows—an image that encapsulates the film’s central collision of domestic “high ground” and the sprawling world below. Clean, dramatic, and extremely displayable as a Kurosawa-era revival sheet.
