“Live and Let Die” (007/死ぬのは奴らだ), Japanese James Bond Movie Poster, Original Release 1973, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1104
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1973 for the first Japanese release of Live and Let Die, the eighth official James Bond film and Roger Moore’s debut as 007. Directed by Guy Hamilton, the film stars Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Gloria Hendry, Clifton James, Julius Harris, and Geoffrey Holder.
Film background
Released in 1973, Live and Let Die marked a major turning point in the James Bond series. Following Sean Connery’s era-defining run, Roger Moore introduced a new Bond persona: smoother, lighter, and more ironic, while still operating within a world of danger, glamour, and elaborate action set pieces.
The film sends Bond from London to New York, New Orleans, and the Caribbean as he investigates the mysterious deaths of British agents and uncovers a criminal network involving heroin smuggling, voodoo ritual, tarot symbolism, and the powerful villain Dr. Kananga / Mr. Big. It is also famous for its theme song by Paul McCartney & Wings, one of the most celebrated Bond title songs.
Poster design
A spectacular Japanese theatrical design using the classic Robert McGinnis campaign artwork, densely packed with Bond iconography. At the centre stands Roger Moore as James Bond, holding a pistol with calm composure, surrounded by an explosive montage of tarot cards, speedboats, women, weapons, fire, reptiles, and action imagery.
The large black 007 logo dominates the upper section, with the Japanese title 死ぬのは奴らだ printed beneath in bold red lettering. The tarot cards behind Bond — including Devil, Death, Lovers, and Fortune — directly reference the film’s voodoo and fortune-telling motifs, especially the character of Solitaire, played by Jane Seymour.
The lower composition includes a dramatic speedboat chase, a crocodile, a bullet firing across the scene, and multiple female figures arranged in McGinnis’s unmistakable glamour-action style. The left-side Japanese copy promotes the film as the eighth entry in the 007 series, emphasising that its ideas, spectacle, and entertainment value have been “powered up” for a new era.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese Bond posters from the Roger Moore era are increasingly collectible, and this example is especially significant as the first Japanese poster for Moore’s debut as James Bond. The design is one of the most recognisable and visually rich campaigns of the entire franchise, combining Bond glamour, 1970s action, voodoo imagery, and McGinnis’s distinctive illustrative style.
For collectors of James Bond, Roger Moore, Robert McGinnis artwork, 1970s cinema, and Japanese film poster design, this is a highly desirable original release piece.
