“Mobile Suit Gundam” (機動戦士ガンダム), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) F281

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the cinema release of Mobile Suit Gundam / 「機動戦士ガンダム」, the theatrical compilation film adapted from the landmark 1979 television series created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

A foundational work in Japanese animation history, Mobile Suit Gundam helped redefine the mecha genre through its “real robot” approach: military science fiction, political conflict, moral ambiguity, and psychologically complex young pilots rather than simple heroic super-robot fantasy.

Film background
Set during the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, the story follows Amuro Ray, a teenage civilian who becomes the reluctant pilot of the RX-78-2 Gundam aboard the White Base. As the war intensifies, Amuro is forced to confront both the violence of combat and his own emerging Newtype abilities.

The theatrical compilation films were crucial in transforming Gundam from a television series into a major cultural phenomenon, helping establish the franchise as one of the most important and enduring works in anime and science-fiction history.

Poster design
This B2 features one of the most powerful early Gundam compositions. Amuro Ray stands alone on a rocky peak, helmet in hand, presented almost as a mythic young hero. Behind him rises the immense head and shadowed upper form of the RX-78-2 Gundam, emerging from a deep blue field of space.

The contrast between Amuro’s small human figure and the monumental Gundam behind him gives the image its emotional force: the loneliness of the young pilot set against the vast machinery of war. The glowing eyes of the Gundam, the starry blue void, and the warm cream-toned background create a beautiful early-1980s anime atmosphere.

The lower section is anchored by the bold red Japanese title:

「機動戦士ガンダム」

The painted artwork is widely associated with the visual language of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, whose character design and illustration style helped define the original Gundam era.

Condition
Good+ condition. This is a theatre-used example and shows multiple condition issues, which have been carefully taken into account when pricing.

Visible condition points include creasing, edge wear, small tears, surface marks, pinholes, handling wear, and tape repairs on the reverse. There is also visible wear near the upper area and along the lower edge, as shown in the detailed photographs.

Despite these issues, the poster retains strong colour, impressive artwork, and excellent visual presence. Once framed, it will display very well.

Please review the photographs carefully, as they show the exact poster for sale.
