“Mobile Suit Gundam” (機動戦士ガンダム), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1981, First Release, RX-78 Gundam / Zaku Design, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) H262

Sale price $385.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1981 first release of Mobile Suit Gundam, distributed by Shochiku and released in Japanese cinemas on 14 March 1981. A spectacular illustration of the RX-78 Gundam beneath an enormous Zaku gives this design an imposing presence.

The first of Yoshiyuki Tomino’s three theatrical compilation films, Mobile Suit Gundam brought the landmark 1979–80 television series to the cinema. It introduces Amuro Ray, a teenager drawn into the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon after becoming the pilot of the experimental Gundam.

As Amuro joins the crew of White Base, his encounters with the formidable Char Aznable establish one of anime’s defining rivalries. The film combines mechanical spectacle with the fear, responsibility and emotional strain experienced by young people caught in war.

The poster concentrates on the opposing mobile suits through an exceptionally dramatic use of scale. In the foreground, the Gundam stands with its beam rifle aimed directly towards the viewer, its shield raised beside it. Carefully rendered highlights give its armour a substantial, almost metallic appearance.

Behind it, a colossal Zaku head and upper body emerge from a deep brown-black background. Red-orange illumination picks out the helmet, armoured contours and distinctive ribbed breathing tubes, while its glowing mono-eye dominates the upper half of the composition.

Fine concentric targeting circles and crosshair markings extend across the image, bringing a technical precision to the atmospheric illustration. Tall orange “MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM” lettering runs down the left edge, balanced by the bold turquoise-and-yellow Japanese title at lower right.

The white promotional text at the upper right reads:

「RX78ガンダム VS MS06ザク」
“RX-78 Gundam vs. MS-06 Zaku”

Beneath it, the accompanying line invites audiences to carry their excitement into the cockpit. The composition captures the appeal of early Gundam: powerful machinery, dramatic confrontation and a convincing sense of military hardware.

An outstanding display piece for collectors of original Gundam, classic mecha anime and Japanese animation posters of the early 1980s.
