“Mobile Suit Gundam RX-78 VS MS-X16” (機動戦士ガンダム), Original Japanese ANIMEC Promotional Poster, Early 1980s, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q264

Sale price $165.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster produced during the early Mobile Suit Gundam boom of the 1980s, issued in connection with ANIMEC / Total Shop of Animation & Comics rather than as a standard theatrical movie poster.

This is an especially desirable non-theatrical Gundam piece: a retail / anime shop promotional poster from the formative years of the franchise, when Mobile Suit Gundam was rapidly becoming one of the defining cultural forces in Japanese animation, model kits, and fan collecting.

Historical context
First broadcast in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam transformed the mecha genre by introducing a more serious, militarised, and psychologically grounded science-fiction universe. By the early 1980s, following reruns, theatrical compilation films, model-kit popularity, and specialist anime magazines, Gundam had become a full-scale phenomenon.

This poster belongs to that original boom period. Its ANIMEC branding is particularly important: Animec was one of the key Japanese anime magazine / retail platforms of the era, closely tied to early fan culture, character goods, and the developing collector market. As such, this is not simply a Gundam image poster, but a strong piece of early anime retail history.

Poster design
The design is a dramatic space-battle composition centred on the RX-78 Gundam, shown flying forward with beam rifle and shield against a vast star field. Behind it looms a huge, shadowed enemy mobile suit form, giving the image a strong sense of scale and confrontation.

The lower half features a large spacecraft / carrier advancing through space, surrounded by smaller mobile suits and glowing points of battle light. The composition is rich with classic early Gundam atmosphere: deep blues, star fields, mechanical detail, and the contrast between heroic mobile suit action and military-scale space warfare.

At the lower left, the printed title reads:

RX-78 VS MS-X16
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM

The official 機動戦士ガンダム / Gundam logo appears at upper left, while the lower-right margin carries the key ANIMEC / Total Shop of Animation & Comics branding.

Collector significance
Original ANIMEC Gundam promotional posters are significantly harder to find than standard theatrical posters from the film trilogy. These pieces were often displayed in hobby shops, anime stores, or retail environments, and many were handled, damaged, or discarded.

This example is particularly appealing because it combines early Gundam, ANIMEC provenance, RX-78 artwork, and a bold combat-focused layout. It has strong crossover appeal for collectors of vintage anime, Mobile Suit Gundam, Sunrise-era mecha design, Japanese hobby-shop ephemera, and 1980s anime graphics.
