This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1989 for the first release of Mobile Suit SD Gundam (機動戦士SDガンダム), one of the most charming and collectible branches of the wider Gundam universe. Rather than the serious military tone of the mainline Mobile Suit Gundam works, SD Gundam reimagined the franchise in super-deformed form—smaller, funnier, cuter, and far more openly comic—while still retaining the iconography that made Gundam instantly recognisable.
Film background
By the late 1980s, SD Gundam had become a major phenomenon in its own right, spinning the original Gundam world into a playful, parody-inflected format that appealed to both younger viewers and established fans. Super-deformed character design was central to its appeal: familiar mobile suits and characters were transformed into exaggerated, big-headed forms that made room for humour, slapstick, and a lighter tone without losing the visual DNA of the franchise. Posters and paper from this early SD Gundam period are especially desirable because they capture the exact moment when Gundam broadened beyond serious science-fiction into something much more toyetic, pop, and mischievously self-aware.
Poster design
A fantastic and highly displayable Japanese design built around bright colour, cartoon energy, and instantly recognisable SD styling. The central figure is a super-deformed Gundam hero charging forward with beam saber and shield, rendered in a bold, chunky style that perfectly captures the appeal of the series. Around him, smaller SD characters and enemy designs float across a vivid cosmic blue field, with stars, planets, speech bubbles, and comic expressions creating a sense of constant motion and play. The oversized 機動戦士SDガンダム title at the top gives the sheet tremendous visual punch, while the overall composition feels like a perfect bridge between anime poster art and late-1980s Japanese character merchandising. It is a superb wall piece: colourful, nostalgic, and unmistakably fun.
