This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1984 for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark pre-Studio Ghibli masterpiece. One of the most beautiful and sought-after Japanese anime posters of the 1980s, this design is especially admired for its quiet, contemplative mood and for the way it presents Nausicaä not in battle, but in profound harmony with the natural world around her.
Film background
Released in 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is one of the foundational works of modern Japanese animation. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with music by Joe Hisaishi, the film introduced a richly imagined post-apocalyptic world in which poisoned landscapes, giant insects, and fragile human societies exist in a state of uneasy balance. At the heart of it is Nausicaä, one of Miyazaki’s greatest heroines: courageous, compassionate, intelligent, and defined above all by her ability to understand rather than dominate the natural world. The film remains a cornerstone of anime history and a key work in the broader Ghibli story.
Poster design
This is the celebrated contemplative 1984 design. It features a superb illustration of Nausicaä resting on an Ohmu, with Teto at her shoulder, surrounded by softly rendered spores and organic forms. The image has the feel of an image-board illustration, with delicate linework and a beautifully subdued palette of coral, teal, blue, and cream. The vertical text at upper left adds a poetic dimension, describing Nausicaä and her destiny: the one who loves the trees, speaks with insects, and summons the wind like a bird, who will descend in blue upon a field of gold and renew the bond with the lost earth. It is an exceptionally elegant and evocative design, and one of the most beautiful posters produced for the film.
