“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese B2 Horizontal Theatrical Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare Style B / Image Board Design with Printed Miyazaki Signature, B2 Size (approx. 73 × 51 cm) Q291

Sale price $895.00

This is an original Japanese B2 horizontal theatrical poster printed in 1984 for the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Isao Takahata, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. The printed credits identify Tokuma Shoten and Hakuhodo, with Toei as distributor.

Issued one year before the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985, Nausicaä is the landmark film whose critical and commercial success directly led to the studio’s creation. It remains one of the essential works of Miyazaki’s career and a foundational title within the Ghibli canon.

Unlike the standard vertical B2 theatrical posters, this is the very rare horizontal “Style B” design. It is significantly less frequently encountered than the familiar vertical key-art poster and is highly prized by collectors of early Miyazaki, pre-Ghibli material, and Japanese animation history. The lower right includes the printed Eirin 83436 mark, supporting its status as a Japanese cinema-use theatrical poster. The poster is single-sided, with a blank reverse.

Why this example is extraordinary — rarity & market

Original country-of-origin Japanese theatrical issue from the landmark 1984 release.

Very rare horizontal B2 / Style B format, far scarcer than the standard vertical Nausicaä poster.

Historically important pre-Ghibli artifact: produced before Studio Ghibli existed, but directly tied to the film whose success led to the studio’s formation.

Features artwork by Miyazaki in a raw image-board style, rather than a polished cel-style advertising image.

Includes the unusual printed “82 MIYAZAKI” signature retained in the artwork — an uncommon feature on Miyazaki theatrical poster designs.

Connected to one of the defining animated films of the 1980s, an award-winning work that established much of the creative world later associated with Studio Ghibli.

Poster design

A dramatic and painterly “combat” composition: Nausicaä is shown crouched in a ruined battlefield landscape, wearing her helmet and carrying a long rifle. The mood is far grittier than the serene imagery of the better-known vertical poster, presenting Nausicaä not simply as a heroine of flight and nature, but as a figure of resistance, survival, and moral clarity amid war.

The design is especially striking for its restraint. A blue-green and ochre watercolor field is crossed by the bold red NAUSICAÄ logotype, while the Japanese title, production credits, Toei distribution line, and Eirin mark are placed discreetly at the lower right. The result is a powerful early Miyazaki design object: spare, atmospheric, and closer in feeling to an original image board than conventional film advertising.

A particularly important feature is the printed “82 MIYAZAKI” signature visible within the artwork. This is not a hand-signed autograph, but a printed facsimile carried over from the original Miyazaki drawing. That printed signature is a highly unusual and distinctive feature for a Miyazaki theatrical poster, adding considerable collector interest.

Condition

Very good. There are visible signs of age and genuine display handling, including pinholes, light edge and corner wear, small nicks/creases, surface scuffs, and minor handling marks. The reverse is blank and shows light age toning/handling consistent with a vintage theatrical poster. Please review the photos; they show the exact poster for sale.

It is over 42 years old.
