“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind — Lives in the Valley of the Wind” (NAUSICAÄ), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q195
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 1984 and licensed by Tokuma Shoten / Hakuhodo during the original release period of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The lower margin carries the period credit line: © HAYAO MIYAZAKI · TOKUMA SHOTEN · HAKUHODO; “PRODUCTS BY IDOL 500 B”. Issued around the film and manga launch window, this official consumer-products poster was sold in Japan as licensed tie-in art and is now highly collectible.
This is not the standard theatrical poster, but a scarce IDOL promotional / merchandise B2 issue, featuring a beautiful watercolour-style portrait of Nausicaä with Teto, surrounded by delicate manga-style vignettes and English promotional text.
Film background
Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark eco-fantasy follows Princess Nausicaä and her faithful fox-squirrel Teto as they navigate the toxic Sea of Decay and seek peace between humanity, nature and the giant Ohmu. Released in 1984, the film was produced before the formal founding of Studio Ghibli, but its artistic and commercial success led directly to the creation of the studio the following year.
For collectors, original 1984 Nausicaä paper is especially important because it belongs to the pre-Ghibli moment when Miyazaki’s cinematic world first emerged in its fully realised form. It is a foundational work in Japanese animation, combining environmental allegory, pacifism, science fiction and mythic adventure.
Poster design
This is a particularly charming and lyrical Nausicaä promotional design. The central image shows Nausicaä seated calmly with Teto resting on her shoulder, rendered in soft watercolour tones against a pale green background. Her expression is gentle, reflective and quietly resolute, capturing the human warmth that defines Miyazaki’s heroine.
Across the top, the English header reads “Lives in the Valley of the Wind. NAUSICAÄ”, with the red stylised NAUSICAÄ lettering adding a strong graphic accent. The surrounding border includes small sepia and olive-toned panels of manga-style imagery: the Ohmu, the Mehve glider, forest landscapes, Nausicaä studies, creature drawings and scenes from the wider world of the story.
The lower English text reads: “Nausicaa is a beautiful girl who lives in the Valley of the Wind. She loves nature, animals and even the insects that people despise. In the way of the world, though, she eventually had to go to war.” This wording gives the poster a distinctive early international-facing quality, while still remaining an original Japanese licensed issue.
The design is refined, decorative and highly displayable: less theatrical than the cinema posters, but arguably closer in spirit to Miyazaki’s illustration work and manga sensibility. It feels as much like an official art print as a promotional object.
Condition
Excellent, close to near mint. The poster presents beautifully, with a clean central image, strong colour, crisp linework and excellent overall display quality. The sheet appears very well preserved for a 1984 B2 promotional poster, with only light handling and age consistent with vintage paper.
