“Perfect Blue” (パーフェクトブルー), Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1997, Very Rare, B3 Size (36.4 × 51.5 cm) P231
This is an original Japanese B3 theatrical poster printed in 1997 for the original release campaign of Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブルー), Satoshi Kon’s iconic psychological thriller. In Japan, the B2 format is the most common poster size by far. This smaller B3 format (approx. 36.4 × 51.5 cm) is encountered less often than the standard B2 and is highly collectible, especially for major anime titles like this.
Perfect Blue is a 1997 Japanese animated psychological thriller directed by Satoshi Kon in his feature directorial debut, animated by Madhouse, and distributed by Rex Entertainment. The screenplay is by Sadayuki Murai, and the story is based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis. The film follows pop idol Mima Kirigoe as she leaves her group to pursue acting, becomes the focus of obsessive stalking, and begins to lose her grip on reality as violent events unfold around her.
This striking original artwork presents Mima reclining against a dense collage of stuffed animals, electronics, plants, lace, clothing, and roses—an intimate yet claustrophobic field of everyday objects that mirrors the film’s themes of fractured identity, performance, and psychological disintegration. Her pale, detached figure dominates the composition, while a shadowy semi-transparent second figure cuts across her body, creating a haunting double-image effect suggestive of Mima’s splintering sense of self. The large pale-yellow PERFECT BLUE title stretches across the image, while the lower credits include 「ベルリン国際映画祭正式招待作品」 (“Officially Invited to the Berlin International Film Festival”) and 「今 敏 第1回監督作品」 (“Satoshi Kon’s first directed feature”), together with the Rex Entertainment logo and 1997 copyright line consistent with original-era Japanese theatrical materials.
