“Pom Poko” (平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA781
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the first domestic theatrical release of Pom Poko (平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ, 1994), the wonderful Studio Ghibli feature directed by Isao Takahata and planned/produced by Hayao Miyazaki. A uniquely Japanese blend of folklore, satire, and environmental parable, the film follows a community of tanuki (raccoon dogs) fighting to protect their habitat from relentless urban development—moving from comedy to tragedy and back again with Takahata’s trademark humanism. For collectors, first-release Japanese theatrical posters for Pom Poko are increasingly sought after as key pieces of 1990s Ghibli history.
Poster design
A vibrant, highly detailed “scroll painting” concept that feels like a playful folk artifact brought to life. The enormous red title 「平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ」 is laid over a hand-drawn, talismanic diagram of tanuki transformation—filled with little motifs, animals, and symbolic circles—like a magical board game or ritual chart. Along the bottom, the tanuki gather in a semicircle around the scroll, clapping and reacting as if witnessing a performance, while the tagline 「タヌキだってがんばってるんだよ。」 (“Even tanuki are doing their best.”) lands with warm humour and quiet poignancy. Clean margins, strong colour, and charming detail make this extremely frame-friendly—a standout Ghibli poster that balances cuteness, tradition, and message in one perfect sheet.
