“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” (スター・ウォーズ エピソード1/ファントム・メナス), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1999, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA766

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), George Lucas’s long-awaited return to the saga—launching the prequel trilogy and reintroducing Star Wars to a new generation. Starring Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Natalie Portman (Padmé Amidala), and Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker), the film is packed with franchise-defining moments: the fall and rise of the Republic’s shadow politics, the introduction of Darth Maul, and the first steps toward the destiny that reshapes the galaxy.

Poster design

A dramatic, high-impact Japanese one-sheet built around the mythic “origin story” tone. The composition layers key faces and symbols into a luminous montage: Qui-Gon and Padmé flank young Anakin, with Obi-Wan igniting his lightsaber and Jar Jar Binks and the droids (R2-D2, C-3PO) anchoring the lower field. Above them, the menacing eyes and red-black mask of Darth Maul dominate the darkness, while the Japanese tagline at the top reads 「すべての伝説には、始まりがある。」 (“Every legend has a beginning.”)—a perfect campaign line for Episode I. The title block 「スター・ウォーズ エピソード1/ファントム・メナス」 is clean and modern, and the overall lighting effects give the poster a cinematic, “event” feel.
