“Triton of the Sea” (海のトリトン), Original Japanese Home Video Promotion Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) F233
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1990 for the home video release of Triton of the Sea (海のトリトン / Umi no Triton), the classic anime adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s celebrated manga, directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino (credited here as 富野由悠季(喜幸)), who would later become internationally renowned as the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Rather than a theatrical poster, this example was produced to promote the complete six-volume VHS / LaserDisc release by Bandai Visual / Emotion, making it a particularly appealing piece for collectors of anime ephemera, Osamu Tezuka material, and early Yoshiyuki Tomino works. Posters of this type were intended for video retail and promotional display, and are often scarcer than standard theatrical campaign material.
About the series
Originally broadcast in the early 1970s, Triton of the Sea is one of the key early anime adaptations of a Tezuka property and occupies an important place in the development of modern Japanese animation. Set within an undersea fantasy world of rival clans, sea creatures, and mythic conflict, the story follows the young hero Triton in his struggle against the forces of Poseidon.
The series is especially notable for bringing together two major names in Japanese popular culture: Osamu Tezuka, often called the “God of Manga,” and Yoshiyuki Tomino, whose later influence on anime history would be immense. As such, this poster has significance not only as a visually attractive collectible, but also as a document of anime history.
Poster design
The design is bright, clean, and highly characteristic of late-1980s / early-1990s Japanese anime video promotion. The composition is dominated by a large portrait of Triton at right, rendered in vivid colour with green hair, red scarf, and youthful, determined expression. Around him are supporting characters and creatures from the series, including marine companions, mermaid figures, and the looming presence of the antagonistic Poseidon figure at upper left.
Across the top, the header reads:
「原作:手塚治虫・演出:富野由悠季(喜幸) 海洋ロマンの傑作、ついに甦る――。」
This promotes the work as a revived masterpiece of ocean romance, emphasizing the prestige of both Tezuka and Tomino.
The centre of the poster is anchored by the large English title:
“TRITON OF THE SEA”
printed in a bold navy serif typeface, beneath which sits the familiar stylized Japanese logo 海のトリトン.
The lower section is especially appealing from a collector’s perspective, as it details the six-volume release schedule, beginning 1/24 and continuing through 3/21, with miniature reproductions of all six jacket illustrations. At far lower right, there is also a small promotional panel for the related LaserDisc box collection, reinforcing the poster’s role as a period home-video advertising piece.
Overall, it is an attractive and historically interesting design that combines character appeal, strong typography, and clear period-specific commercial context.
