This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1999 for the first release of Ultraman M78 Theater: Love & Peace (ウルトラマンM78劇場 LOVE & PEACE), directed by Hiroko Tokita and distributed by Shochiku. The film transforms the heroes and monsters of the Ultra universe into charming super-deformed characters, presenting a playful alternative to the franchise’s traditional live-action spectacle.

Film background

Released in Japanese cinemas on 6 March 1999, Love & Peace is a 23-minute animated omnibus comprising a series of lighthearted comedy segments. Ultraman, Ultraseven, Alien Baltan, Pigmon, Gomora and numerous other familiar characters appear together in a peaceful world filled with domino displays, magic tricks, music and slapstick mishaps.

The short accompanied Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna & Ultraman Gaia: The Battle in Hyperspace, providing younger audiences with a colourful animated companion to the feature-length live-action production. Its distinctive character designs also reflect the enduring appeal of the M78 mascot aesthetic, through which the franchise’s heroes and kaiju were reimagined for younger fans and merchandise.

Poster design

The wonderfully exuberant design places a boldly outlined, super-deformed Ultraman at the centre. His comical expression, prominent sweat drop and playful combination of a fighting stance and peace sign perfectly capture the film’s gentle humour.

Surrounding Ultraman is an extraordinary mosaic of brightly coloured circular portraits featuring an extensive assortment of Ultra Heroes, aliens and kaiju. Familiar characters including Ultraseven, Alien Baltan, Pigmon, Dada, King Joe and Zetton can be discovered among the densely arranged figures, giving the artwork an engaging, almost puzzle-like quality.

The bubbly red Japanese title and English “LOVE & PEACE” lettering dominate the upper composition, while the light-blue filmstrip borders reinforce its theatrical purpose. The red ribbon below Ultraman reads “All the cheerful friends appear in the movie!!”, emphasizing the poster’s joyous ensemble concept.
