“Return of Ultraman: Jiro-kun Rides a Monster” (帰ってきたウルトラマン 次郎くん怪獣にのる), Original Release Japanese Poster 1972, Speed Size (26 × 75 cm) P113
This is an original Japanese “speed”-size theatrical poster produced for the 1972 cinema release of Return of Ultraman: Jiro-kun Rides a Monster (帰ってきたウルトラマン 次郎くん怪獣にのる), a short theatrical feature (ブローアップ版) derived from Tsuburaya Productions’ Shōwa-era tokusatsu TV series Return of Ultraman. Released as part of the Toho Champion Festival (東宝チャンピオンまつり), it centres on young Jirō-kun and the battle against the hermit-crab monster Yadokarin (ヤドカリン)—a perfect snapshot of peak early-’70s Ultraman popularity.
Design
Speed posters were printed in a tall, narrow format for display in theatre lobbies, corridors, and ticket areas—far fewer were produced than the standard B2 size, and survival rates are low. Here, the design is brilliantly direct: a saturated sky-blue field frames Ultraman in a dramatic fighting pose, while the enormous vertical red title typography (“帰ってきたウルトラマン”) delivers maximum impact from a distance. The energetic vertical copy at upper left (“怪獣ヤドカリンをやっつけろ!…”) adds pure period charm, and the Toho branding and © TOHO CO., LTD. 1972 print line anchor it firmly as authentic early-’70s Japanese theatrical ephemera.
