“A Place in the Sun” (陽のあたる場所), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1952, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51.5 × 72.8 cm) T261
This is an original Japanese B2 poster from the 1952 first theatrical release of A Place in the Sun, George Stevens’ celebrated drama starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters. An exceptionally scarce Japanese release poster for one of Hollywood’s great romantic tragedies, this is a compelling opportunity to acquire a title that is extremely difficult to find in any condition.
Adapted from Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy, the film follows George Eastman, an ambitious young man whose desire for wealth and acceptance draws him into a devastating conflict between two relationships. Stevens combines the glamour of George’s aspirations with an unsettling examination of class, responsibility and moral compromise.
The film received six Academy Awards, including Best Director for Stevens, and remains celebrated for its performances and intimate cinematography. Its emotional power rests particularly on the pairing of Clift and Taylor, whose faces dominate this remarkable Japanese design.
The composition brings the two stars into an almost overwhelming close-up. Taylor’s softly illuminated profile rises above Clift’s troubled, downward gaze, creating an image that captures both the romance and the unease at the heart of the film. Warm flesh tones emerge from a dark background, with little surrounding detail to distract from their expressions.
Across the lower portion, the Japanese title 「陽のあたる場所」 appears in elegant, elongated pale-lilac lettering, balanced by the white English title at the right. The Paramount mountain emblem occupies the upper corner, while an Oscar statuette and the announcement of six Academy Awards reinforce the film’s prestige at the lower left.
The simple opening line, 「若き世代に捧ぐ」—“Dedicated to the younger generation”, adds a poignant note to this portrait of youthful longing and ambition.
Condition: Very Good for its age.
The poster shows visible signs of use. There are tears extending inward from the upper and lower edges, with tape repairs visible on the reverse. The back also shows age toning, staining and scattered coloured marks.
Despite this wear, the close-up composition remains striking. We have taken the condition into account when pricing. Once framed, this poster will display very well.
