“Une femme est une femme” / “A Woman Is a Woman”, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1988, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E300
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1988 Japanese re-release of Une femme est une femme / A Woman Is a Woman, Jean-Luc Godard’s celebrated French New Wave romantic comedy-drama starring Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jean-Claude Brialy.
One of Godard’s most playful and visually distinctive films, A Woman Is a Woman combines romantic comedy, musical pastiche, formal experimentation, and French New Wave self-awareness. This Japanese re-release poster is especially attractive, using a bold blue, white, and red graphic design that directly echoes the film’s French identity and Pop-era visual language.
Film background
Originally released in 1961, A Woman Is a Woman follows Angela, a Parisian dancer who wants to have a child. When her lover Émile refuses, she turns instead to his best friend Alfred, setting off a witty and stylized romantic triangle filled with comic tension, musical interruptions, and Godard’s characteristic fourth-wall play.
The film was written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The principal cast includes Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jean-Claude Brialy, with cinematography by Raoul Coutard and music by Michel Legrand.
The film is widely admired as Godard’s first colour and CinemaScope feature, and remains one of the key works of the French New Wave. At the 11th Berlin International Film Festival, Anna Karina won the Silver Bear for Best Actress, while Godard received a special jury award.
Poster design
The poster uses a clean and highly graphic tricolour composition. The upper section features a large blue rounded rectangle containing three circular portrait vignettes of the principal cast: Jean-Claude Brialy at left, Anna Karina at centre, and Jean-Paul Belmondo at right. Each portrait is bordered by small white dots, giving the layout a playful, modernist quality.
The centre is dominated by the French title:
UNE FEMME EST UNE FEMME
printed in enormous red block capitals across a white field. Beneath it appears the director credit:
“un film de JEAN-LUC GODARD”
with additional credits for Raoul Coutard, Bernard Evein, and Michel Legrand printed below.
The lower section features a warm orange-toned still of the three leads together in an interior hallway, with Anna Karina positioned between Brialy and Belmondo. The contrast between the strong graphic typography and the soft photographic imagery gives the poster a stylish, unmistakably New Wave character.
The overall design is bright, elegant, and highly evocative of late-1980s Japanese revival poster art for classic French cinema.
