This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 for Kodansha’s influential series “art now / 現代の美術”, designed by the visionary graphic artist Tadanori Yokoo.
Artist background
A towering figure of post-war Japanese graphic design, Yokoo fused pop art, psychedelia, and archival collage into a bold visual language that reshaped advertising, theatre graphics, and fine art. Emerging from the 1960s counterculture, his posters for Shūji Terayama/Tenjō Sajiki and his self-referential “posters about posters” made him an international star; his work now resides in major museum collections worldwide.
Poster design
A sun-blasted beach collage layers high/low iconography in classic Yokoo fashion: comic-book halftone clouds and palm silhouettes frame a serene photo shoreline; a reclining neoclassical nude stretches across the foreground beside neatly arrayed apples, citrus, bread, and fizzy drinks—a witty still-life of consumption and desire. The upper badge reads “art now / 現代の美術 全12巻・別巻1 講談社版,” while TADANORI YOKOO is discreetly printed at lower left. The mash-up of photographic textures, dot screens, and saturated oranges/yellows is pure Yokoo: playful, sensual, and razor-sharp in composition.
