“Breakdown” / 「ブレーキ・ダウン」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA945

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Breakdown / 「ブレーキ・ダウン」, the high-tension action thriller directed by Jonathan Mostow and starring Kurt Russell, J. T. Walsh, and Kathleen Quinlan.

A sharp and highly effective 1990s suspense poster, this Japanese design captures the film’s core premise with immediate force: an ordinary roadside breakdown becomes a nightmare of disappearance, paranoia, and pursuit.

Film background
Released in 1997, Breakdown follows Jeff Taylor, whose car breaks down with his wife on a remote desert highway. When a passing truck driver offers to take her to a nearby diner for help, she vanishes without a trace. What begins as a simple mechanical problem rapidly turns into a desperate search, as Jeff discovers that the people around him may be part of a much larger and more dangerous conspiracy.

Directed by Jonathan Mostow, the film is widely admired as a lean, expertly paced thriller, built around mounting dread, desert isolation, and Kurt Russell’s intense central performance.

Poster design
The poster uses a dramatic, action-heavy Japanese layout. The upper right is dominated by a huge, grainy close-up of Kurt Russell behind the wheel, his face strained with panic and determination. Across the top, the white Japanese headline reads:

「始まりは何でもない車のトラブルだった…」
“It began as nothing more than an ordinary car problem…”

At left, explosive action imagery shows a truck, fire, smoke, and the desert-road danger at the heart of the film. The bottom section widens out into a stark view of the stranded vehicle in the empty landscape, underscoring the film’s terrifying sense of isolation.

The vertical red copy heightens the paranoia of the story, suggesting that the driver behind you may not be ordinary and that no one will believe or help you. The design is anchored by the enormous red brush-style Japanese title 「ブレーキ・ダウン」, with 「カート・ラッセル主演」 — “Starring Kurt Russell” — printed boldly to the left.

The poster also advertises the film’s American box-office success with 「全米No.1」 and a note referencing its strong ranking performance.
