“Breathless” / “À bout de souffle” / 「勝手にしやがれ」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) F283

Sale price $235.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical re-release poster printed for the 1993 Japanese revival release of Breathless / À bout de souffle / 「勝手にしやがれ」, Jean-Luc Godard’s revolutionary French New Wave masterpiece starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg.

Originally released in 1960, Breathless is one of the defining works of modern cinema. This Japanese re-release poster uses a striking French-language design, preserving the film’s original Nouvelle Vague identity with great elegance.

Film background
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, from a story by François Truffaut, with Claude Chabrol credited as technical advisor, Breathless follows Michel Poiccard, a reckless young criminal who models himself on American gangster cinema. After killing a policeman, he flees to Paris and reconnects with Patricia, an American student and aspiring journalist, as the police gradually close in.

The film became a landmark of the French New Wave, celebrated for its jump cuts, handheld cinematography by Raoul Coutard, spontaneous street shooting, and radical casualness of tone. It transformed both Godard and Belmondo into international cinematic figures and remains one of the most influential films ever made.

Poster design
The poster is beautifully composed in two sections. The upper image features a large black-and-white still of Jean Seberg kissing Jean-Paul Belmondo on the cheek beside a Paris street newsstand — one of the most charming and enduring images associated with the film.

The lower third is a bold black typographic field, dominated by the original French title:

À BOUT DE SOUFFLE

printed in oversized red serif lettering. The surrounding white credits list Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Raoul Coutard, and Martial Solal.

The absence of Japanese text on the front gives the poster a particularly refined European art-house character, making it especially attractive as a display piece.
