This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1972 for the Japanese release of Buck and the Preacher, the revisionist Western directed by Sidney Poitier and starring Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, and Cameron Mitchell. In Japan, the film was released under the striking title ブラック・ライダー (Burakku Raidā / “Black Rider”), which appears prominently in large, highly stylised black lettering across the upper-left portion of the design.
Film background
Released in 1972, Buck and the Preacher occupies an important place in American cinema as Sidney Poitier’s directorial debut and as a rare Western centred on the experience of African Americans in the post-Civil War West. The story follows Buck, a wagon master helping formerly enslaved families move west in search of safety and a new life, and the flamboyant Preacher, who becomes his unlikely ally against violent white raiders and opportunists.
For collectors, the film is especially notable because it stands apart from the classical Hollywood Western. It reworks frontier mythology through race, displacement, and survival, giving the genre a political and historical dimension that was still unusual at the time. That combination of major stars, social significance, and 1970s revisionist Western energy makes original paper for the title particularly appealing.
Poster design
This Japanese poster has excellent graphic impact and a distinctly Japanese design approach. The upper half is dominated by a bold orange ground with dramatic black illustration of riders on horseback, creating a stark, almost graphic-novel-like sense of motion and danger. Over this, the Japanese title ブラック・ライダー is rendered in huge black characters, giving the sheet strong wall presence and an immediate visual punch.
The lower section shifts into full colour, featuring Sidney Poitier in the foreground aiming a revolver, with Harry Belafonte just behind him, also armed and alert. This contrast between the monochrome action imagery above and the vivid full-colour portraiture below is particularly effective. It gives the poster a dual character: at once a dynamic Western action design and a star-driven character piece.
Japanese western posters of this period often have a graphic identity quite different from their American counterparts, and this is a particularly attractive example. Rather than relying on a crowded montage, it distils the film into bold typography, strong contrast, and charismatic star imagery.
