This is an original Japanese poster, printed in 1960 for the first Japanese release of Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Now over 64 years old, this poster is in mint condition — an extraordinarily rare find for one of Disney’s most visually stunning and historically significant animated features.

Released in the U.S. in 1959, Sleeping Beauty was Disney’s 16th animated feature film, based on the timeless fairy tale by Charles Perrault. It was also the final fairy tale adaptation personally overseen by Walt Disney before his passing in 1966. The studio wouldn’t return to the genre for another 30 years, with The Little Mermaid in 1989.

Directed by Clyde Geronimi with contributions from Disney’s famed “Nine Old Men,” and featuring music adapted from Tchaikovsky’s 1890 ballet, the film was groundbreaking both artistically and technically. It was the first animated feature shot in Super Technirama 70 and one of the earliest presented in 6-channel stereophonic sound, setting a new standard for cinematic animation.

Although its initial release met with mixed reviews, Sleeping Beauty has since become one of Disney’s most beloved classics. In 2019, it was added to the U.S. National Film Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.

This poster features a vibrant and elegant design exclusive to the Japanese release — a stunning example of early Showa-era Disney artwork.
