"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1969, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O289
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1969 for Ken Hughes’ fantastical musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Produced by Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, adapted from Ian Fleming’s novel, and co-written by Roald Dahl, the film stars Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes with songs by the Sherman Brothers (“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Hushabye Mountain”). A widescreen family spectacle, it became a perennial favorite and a showcase of late-1960s British musical craft and special effects.
Film background
Inventor Caractacus Potts transforms a race car into a flying, floating wonder, whisking his children and Truly Scrumptious into a storybook adventure. Elaborate sets, ingenious miniatures, and an earworm score place the film alongside the era’s great studio musicals and cemented the magical car as an enduring pop icon.
Poster design
A joyous, kinetic composition in sunlit pastels: the winged Chitty banks across the sky, rotor blades spinning as a striped wing unfurls. Below, a serpentine ribbon of roadway carries vintage racers, while musical staves and dance vignettes spiral around the bold red Japanese title 「チキ・チキ・バン・バン」. The United Artists mark, 70mm call-out, and bilingual credit cluster ground the layout—pure, optimistic late-’60s design energy.
