Film background

Released in the United States in 1973, Cinderella Liberty follows John Baggs Jr., a U.S. Navy sailor temporarily stranded in Seattle while awaiting reassignment. During his unexpected leave, he meets Maggie Paul, a sharp-tongued but vulnerable sex worker raising her troubled young son alone.

What begins as a casual relationship gradually develops into a tender and complicated family bond. Directed and produced by Mark Rydell from Darryl Ponicsan’s novel, the film is distinguished by its emotionally direct performances, bittersweet view of working-class life, and acclaimed score by John Williams.

Marsha Mason’s performance brought her major international recognition, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and an Academy Award nomination. The film also received further Academy Award recognition for its music.
