“City of God” / 「シティ・オブ・ゴッド」, Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 2003, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA840

Sale price $250.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2003 for the Japanese release of City of God / 「シティ・オブ・ゴッド」, the internationally acclaimed Brazilian crime drama directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund.

Based on the novel by Paulo Lins, City of God is widely regarded as one of the defining films of the 2000s: urgent, kinetic, brutal, and unforgettable. This Japanese poster is especially striking, with its bold two-part composition, high-contrast imagery, and monumental metallic-gold title typography.

Film background
Originally released in Brazil in 2002 and in Japan in 2003, City of God chronicles the rise of organised crime in the Cidade de Deus favela of Rio de Janeiro from the late 1960s through the early 1980s.

The story is told through the eyes of Rocket, an aspiring photographer who observes and documents the violent world around him, including the rise of the ruthless young gang leader Li’l Zé. The film combines street-level realism with extraordinary visual energy, using non-professional actors, rapid editing, and a fractured narrative structure to create one of the most powerful crime films of modern cinema.

The film received major international acclaim and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster uses a bold, graphic two-tier layout. The upper section features the iconic high-contrast image of a young armed gang member, tinted in harsh yellow and black, grinning while pointing a handgun directly outward. The image is confrontational and immediately establishes the film’s atmosphere of youth, violence, and danger.

Across the centre, the enormous metallic-gold title CITY OF GOD dominates the sheet, with the Japanese title 「シティ・オブ・ゴッド」 printed beneath in white. At the lower edge, a stark horizontal band shows a group of armed youths standing in formation, giving the poster a documentary-like sense of collective menace.

The vertical Japanese copy on the left reads:

「暴力も銃もドラッグも、すぐそこにある日常を駆け抜ける少年たちの、事実にもとづく物語。」
“A story based on true events of boys running through an everyday life where violence, guns, and drugs are right there.”

The poster also highlights the film’s international recognition, including its Cannes Film Festival and Tokyo International Film Festival presence, printed above the lower image band.

The overall design is direct, severe, and highly effective: crime cinema, social realism, youth violence, and international festival prestige compressed into one powerful Japanese release poster.
