“Edward Scissorhands” / 「シザーハンズ」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1991, Tim Burton, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A293
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1991 for the first Japanese release of Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton’s celebrated dark fantasy romance starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder.
Released at the beginning of the 1990s, Edward Scissorhands quickly became one of Burton’s defining works: a modern fairy tale combining gothic fantasy, suburban satire, and tragic romance. The film is especially admired for Depp’s haunting performance as Edward, Danny Elfman’s lyrical score, and the unforgettable visual world created by Burton and his collaborators, including special effects artist Stan Winston.
Directed by Tim Burton, the film tells the story of Edward, an unfinished artificial young man with scissors for hands, who is taken in by a suburban family and gradually forms a tender bond with Kim, played by Winona Ryder. What begins as a fable of innocence and wonder becomes a moving study of difference, loneliness, and the impossibility of fitting into an ordinary world.
Today, Edward Scissorhands is widely regarded as one of the most important fantasy films of its era and a key title for collectors of Burton material, 1990s cinema, and Japanese posters.
This Japanese B2 is an especially elegant and memorable design, leaning strongly into the film’s romantic and melancholic fairy-tale qualities.
The central image presents an intimate embrace between Edward and Kim. Edward, with his pale face and wild black hair, looks outward with a distant, sorrowful expression, while Kim rests against him, reinforcing the emotional core of the story. His elaborate scissor hands rise dramatically at the right, immediately identifying the character while also symbolising both his beauty and his danger.
A particularly poetic detail is the yellow butterfly resting delicately on the tip of one blade — a visual metaphor for Edward’s fragile gentleness and the tragedy of a character who longs for closeness yet cannot touch without risk.
Rather than emphasizing the darker gothic aspects of the film, the poster places the couple against a bright blue sky with soft white clouds, giving the composition an almost dreamlike innocence. This is very much in keeping with Japanese poster design of the period, which often distilled a film down to its most emotionally resonant idea.
The Japanese campaign text is especially evocative. At the top appears:
「汚れを知らない優しいエドワード。」
“Gentle Edward, who knows nothing of impurity.”
Below the image, a second line reads:
「天使の心を持つ彼、その美しさに彼女は魅せられていく。」
“He possesses the heart of an angel, and she becomes drawn to his beauty.”
The bold red title シザーハンズ dominates the lower portion, while the original English title edward SCISSORHANDS appears neatly at lower left. The bottom credits also note the impressive creative team, including Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Danny Elfman, and Stan Winston, alongside the 20th Century Fox logo.
