This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1981 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Eraserhead, David Lynch’s extraordinary debut feature. First released in the United States in 1977 and arriving in Japan several years later, the film had already begun to build its reputation as one of the defining midnight movies of modern cinema. This Japanese first-release poster is a superb piece of original Lynch ephemera, visually austere, unsettling, and completely in tune with the film’s strange, dreamlike power.
Film background
Written, directed, produced, and edited by David Lynch, Eraserhead is one of the great cult films of the late 20th century. Set in a bleak industrial landscape, it follows Henry Spencer as he navigates anxiety, fatherhood, sexuality, and nightmare logic in a world that feels both intimate and infernal. Refusing conventional narrative explanation, the film became famous for its haunting sound design, stark black-and-white imagery, and unforgettable central creature effects, helping establish Lynch immediately as one of the most original voices in American cinema. Few debut films have had such a lasting influence on surrealist, horror, and art-house filmmaking.
Poster design
A striking and highly displayable Japanese design built around one of the film’s most disturbing and memorable images: the swaddled infant-like figure suspended in harsh monochrome light against a deep black field. The composition is severe, almost gallery-like, with the image contained inside a large black frame and the vivid red vertical イレイザーヘッド title cutting down the right side. On the left, the Japanese copy references the film’s status as a “red baby” nightmare born from the world of The Elephant Man director David Lynch, giving the poster a wonderful moment-specific first-release context. It is an exceptionally elegant and ominous design—minimal, confrontational, and unmistakably Lynchian.
