“Female Prisoner Scorpion 701: Beast Stable” (女囚さそり けもの部屋), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1973, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) L268

Sale price $225.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1973 for the first theatrical release of Female Prisoner Scorpion 701: Beast Stable (Joshū Sasori - Kemono Beya), the third film in Toei’s legendary Female Convict Scorpion cycle. Starring Meiko Kaji and directed by Shunya Itō, this is a superb and highly desirable piece of original Japanese exploitation poster design from one of the most visually radical and influential series in 1970s Japanese cinema.

Film background
Released in 1973, Female Prisoner Scorpion 701: Beast Stable is the third entry in the Female Convict Scorpion series, following Female Convict 701: Scorpion and Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41, both released in 1972. Across these first three films, the collaboration between Meiko Kaji and Shunya Itō produced one of the most distinctive bodies of work in Japanese genre cinema: bleak, stylised, rebellious, and charged with rage, surrealism, and unforgettable imagery. By the time of Beast Stable, the series had moved well beyond ordinary women-in-prison exploitation into something far stranger and more poetic, with Kaji’s avenging presence at its centre.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 design is one of the great images of the series. Against a vivid green halftone background, Meiko Kaji appears as a towering black-clad figure in hat and cloak, knife in hand, transformed into an almost mythic avenger. A huge crow dominates the lower foreground, while smaller birds wheel through the composition, reinforcing the film’s atmosphere of menace, isolation, and dark symbolism. The oversized pink title 女囚さそり at the top and the gold けもの部屋 subtitle beneath give the poster tremendous graphic force. It is bold, instantly recognisable, and exceptionally displayable — exactly the kind of striking Japanese exploitation artwork collectors hope to find.
