"HANA-BI", Original Japanese “LaserDisc On-Sale” Speed Poster 1998 (for 1997 film), Speed Size (26 × 73 cm) B262
This is an original Japanese speed-size poster issued in 1998 to promote the domestic LaserDisc release of Takeshi Kitano’s HANA-BI (1997)—winner of the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice International Film Festival. Printed in the tall, narrow format used for shop displays and theatre lobby cases, speed posters were produced in much smaller numbers than standard B2s and survived far less often, making them highly collectible.
Film background
Written, directed by and starring Takeshi Kitano (Beat Takeshi), HANA-BI fuses tender melodrama with sudden, painterly violence as an ex-detective cares for his ailing wife while settling debts with the yakuza. Co-starring Kayoko Kishimoto, Ren Ōsugi, and Susumu Terajima, with a luminous score by Joe Hisaishi, the film cemented Kitano’s international reputation and became a landmark of 1990s Japanese cinema.
Poster design
A moody coastal tableau of Kitano in sunglasses and suit strides along the shore, superimposed over the film’s iconic sunflower motif. Bold brush lettering “HANA-BI” slashes across the center, with vertical copy at right—「その時に抱きとめてくれるひとがいますか」—mirroring the film’s aching romantic core. A large retail banner block announces “レーザーディスク 8/25 ON SALE”, with stills along the base and credits for Bandai Visual / Home Video. The left column trumpets the Venice 金獅子賞グランプリ win.
