Sale price $295.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1964 for Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear!, Hanna-Barbera’s first animated feature film, released in Japan under the charming local titles 「クマゴローの大冒険」 (Kuma Goro’s Great Adventure) and 「ヨギ・ベア物語」 (The Yogi Bear Story).

A delightful and highly collectible piece of vintage animation paper, this poster captures the playful energy of early Hanna-Barbera at the moment the studio successfully expanded one of its most beloved television creations into a full-length theatrical feature. For collectors of classic animation, Hanna-Barbera material, and mid-century Japanese family-film posters, it is an especially appealing example.

Film background
Released in 1964, Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear! was the first feature-length film built around the enormously popular Yogi Bear character, whose television success had already made him one of the most recognisable animated figures of the period. Produced by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the film brought Yogi, Boo-Boo, Cindy Bear, and Ranger Smith to the big screen in a bright, family-oriented adventure filled with songs, comic action, and the studio’s unmistakable visual personality.

The Japanese release is particularly interesting for the way it localised the title and character identity for domestic audiences, presenting Yogi as “Kuma Goro”, a memorable and affectionate Japanese adaptation that gives the poster additional cultural charm.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 design is cheerful, open, and immediately eye-catching, using a clean pastel-blue background and a series of lively cartoon vignettes arranged across the sheet.

At the centre, a large, smiling Yogi Bear dominates the poster, shown in full figure balancing playfully on a red-and-white striped circus ball. He wears his signature green hat and tie, and the composition is animated with dotted movement lines and multicoloured stars, giving the design a buoyant, musical quality.

The lower-left corner introduces a circus-adventure setting, with Cindy Bear riding in a bright red vintage car, accompanied by a smaller Yogi, while a circus tent rises in the background. Elsewhere, Ranger Smith appears flying a small red helicopter, while Boo-Boo Bear and Ranger Smith are shown again at lower right in a humorous salute-and-inspection pose.

The typography is equally appealing. Across the top, the main Japanese title クマゴローの大冒険 appears in bold red lettering, while the secondary title ヨギ・ベア物語 sits neatly below in a dark blue box. Supporting vertical copy promotes the picture as a feature-length colour cartoon in Japanese dub format, and emphasises the film’s songs, music, and family appeal.

The lower margin also retains the original English title, “Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear”, along with distribution and production credits, including William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, and the Japanese presentation credit to Columbia Pictures.

Collector significance

Japanese posters for animated films of this period often have a special charm of their own, and this example is particularly successful for the way it combines familiar Hanna-Barbera character art with a clean and spacious Japanese graphic layout. The local retitling to Kuma Goro also adds a layer of period-specific Japanese market history that many collectors find especially appealing.
