“Irma la Douce” (あなただけ今晩は), 1963 Japanese STB Tatekan Poster (First Release), STB Size (c. 51 × 145 cm) P22

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese STB tatekan (two-panel standing) poster issued in Japan in 1963 for Billy Wilder’s beloved comedy Irma la Douce. Presented in the dramatic STB format (two B2 sheets designed to display together as a tall vertical, approx. 51 × 145 cm), it’s an exceptionally elegant and scarce piece of early-’60s Japanese paper—clean, modern, and unmistakably high-end.

Notably, the poster’s bold Japanese titling reads 「あなただけ今晩は」, and the artwork features the classic pairing Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, with Billy Wilder credited vertically along the right side. The Panavision / Technicolor call-outs reinforce its theatrical provenance.

Film background

A quintessential Billy Wilder romantic comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine—mixing sharp humour with genuine tenderness. Set in Paris, the story follows a straight-arrow man whose obsession and devotion lead him into elaborate disguises and escalating complications, all circling around the magnetic Irma. It’s one of the era’s most charming adult comedies—sweet, sly, and beautifully paced.

Poster design

A masterclass in Japanese restraint and vertical composition—designed to read like a gallery piece when assembled:

  • Upper panel: dominated by the huge crimson calligraphic title あなただけ今晩は, with minimal copy and the elegant street-lamp motif beginning to appear—clean negative space that gives the whole display real sophistication.

  • Lower panel: the full iconic scene: Shirley MacLaine perched on a Paris lamppost with her little dog, Jack Lemmon in uniform looking on, and the IRMA LA DOUCE logo anchored at the bottom. The signboard at the top reads “Jack Lemmon / Shirley MacLaine”—a beautiful mid-century design touch.

It’s a striking example of how Japanese STB sets can feel more like poster art than advertising.

Japanese STB tatekan posters were produced in far smaller quantities than standard formats and were intended for prominent theatre display—meaning complete surviving two-panel sets are significantly harder to find than single sheets, especially for a major Billy Wilder title.
