This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1972 for the first Japanese release of Joe Kidd, the Clint Eastwood western directed by John Sturges. In Japan, the film was marketed under the striking alternate title シノーラ (“Sinola”), and this poster is a superb example of early-1970s Japanese western design: bold, sun-scorched, and built entirely around Eastwood’s cool, hard-edged screen persona.
Film background
Originally released in 1972, Joe Kidd stars Clint Eastwood as a former bounty hunter drawn into a violent land dispute in New Mexico, where revolutionaries, wealthy land interests, and personal grudges collide. Directed by John Sturges and written by Elmore Leonard, the film arrived during a fascinating moment in Eastwood’s career, when his image as the definitive modern western anti-hero was already firmly established but still evolving beyond the Dollars trilogy. Lean, tough, and beautifully paced, Joe Kidd remains one of the most stylish Eastwood westerns of the period, with a strong supporting cast including Robert Duvall, John Saxon, Stella Garcia, and Don Stroud.
Poster design
A tremendous Japanese design dominated by a massive close-up of Eastwood beneath a broad black hat, set against an intense orange sky that gives the whole sheet tremendous heat and immediacy. A second full-length gunslinger figure anchors the left side, rifle in one hand and revolver in the other, while a circular rifle-scope vignette, a dusty church-front confrontation, and mounted riders below build out the action. The oversized red katakana title slashing across the lower section gives the poster huge wall presence, and the overall composition feels both minimal and explosive—exactly the kind of image that made Japanese western posters of this era so collectible.
