This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1963 for the first release of Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards!.

Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards! is a fast-paced, stylish crime thriller directed by Seijun Suzuki. While not as well-known as some of his later works, the film is an energetic mix of action, noir aesthetics, and playful absurdity.

Joe Shishido stars as Tajima, a private detective who, after making a living blackmailing unfaithful husbands, inserts himself into a police investigation involving rival Yakuza gangs. Posing as a gang member, he must constantly stay one step ahead of suspicion, leading to a series of high-energy action scenes and shootouts. The film runs just under 90 minutes, maintaining an unrelenting pace to keep the audience engaged.

Shishido, with his distinctively altered cheeks from cosmetic surgery, makes for a charismatic and unique leading man. His performance even includes an unexpected musical number, emblematic of Suzuki’s bold and unpredictable directing style. Though more conventional compared to Suzuki’s later, more experimental films, it still features vivid Cinemascope visuals, striking color choices, and surreal lighting.

One of the standout elements is Harumi Ibe’s jazz-infused score, which enhances the film’s sense of rebellion and cool, much like rock’n’roll in American pop culture. Ultimately, Detective Bureau 2-3 is pure fun, blending genre conventions with Suzuki’s signature flair. It’s an exciting example of Nikkatsu’s crime films, deserving wider recognition.
