“Lawrence of Arabia” / 「アラビアのロレンス」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA844
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1980 Japanese theatrical re-release of Lawrence of Arabia / 「アラビアのロレンス」, David Lean’s monumental historical epic starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, José Ferrer, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains, and Omar Sharif.
One of the most celebrated films in cinema history, Lawrence of Arabia remains a defining example of large-scale epic filmmaking. This Japanese re-release poster presents the film with an elegant, dramatic design: desert gold, black silhouette, red title typography, and a striking illustrated image of Lawrence with raised blade.
Film background
Originally released in 1962, Lawrence of Arabia is based on the life of T. E. Lawrence and his role in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Directed by David Lean and produced by Sam Spiegel, the film is both a vast historical spectacle and a complex psychological portrait of identity, power, violence, and myth-making.
The film received ten Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture and Best Director. Its vast desert cinematography by Freddie Young, score by Maurice Jarre, and Peter O’Toole’s defining central performance have secured its status as one of the great achievements of 20th-century cinema.
Poster design
The poster is dominated by a rich desert-gold background, giving the sheet a restrained but powerful sense of scale. At the top, a large black ink-style illustration shows Lawrence in flowing robes, arm raised with a curved blade, creating an image that is both heroic and mythic.
To the left of the illustration, the Japanese copy references the film’s major Academy Award success and announces its return to the big screen. Beneath this, the English title LAWRENCE OF ARABIA appears in large black serif lettering, followed by the Japanese title 「アラビアのロレンス」 in bold orange-red type.
A small horizontal strip of character portraits sits below the Japanese title, while the lower section shows a lone camel caravan silhouetted against the desert. The bottom credits list the principal cast and identify the film as a David Lean work produced by Sam Spiegel.
The overall design is refined, cinematic, and beautifully balanced, with a strong sense of theatrical prestige.
