“Licence to Kill” (消されたライセンス), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1989, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O737
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1989 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Licence to Kill (消されたライセンス), the 16th official James Bond film, starring Timothy Dalton as 007.
Film background
Released in 1989, Licence to Kill is one of the darkest and most hard-edged entries in the Bond series, pushing the franchise closer to late-1980s action-thriller realism. After Felix Leiter is brutally attacked by drug lord Franz Sanchez, Bond goes rogue—disavowed by MI6 and stripped of his “licence to kill”—to pursue a personal revenge mission. Dalton’s interpretation of Bond is leaner and more volatile than his predecessors, and the film has since gained a strong following for its tougher tone and memorable set-pieces.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is a bold, graphic campaign piece built around an enormous, horizon-spanning “007” numeral in cool blue gradients, with Bond in motion—pistol raised—cutting across the foreground. A collage of key imagery fills the lower right: Sanchez’s steely portrait, the Bond girl in red, a sprawled figure, and explosive action beats (truck chase, aircraft, fireball), all staged against an ocean-and-island backdrop. The headline copy at top reads 「たとえライセンスを失おうとも… 共に命を賭けて闘った友のために——」 (“Even if he loses his licence… for the friend who fought at his side, risking his life—”), neatly summarising the film’s revenge premise.
